Reminiscing Can be Helpful.
We have found that reminiscing is a great way to trigger memories in everyone, but especially for those with a dementing illness. Old memories tend to be recalled easier than more recent memories.
With this in mind, we have put together several different reminiscence ideas for you to use with your family or loved one.
•
Shadow Boxes
•
Collages
•
Family Cookbooks
•
Reminiscence books that can be purchased in bookstores or on the Internet
•
Reminiscing Games
Memories can be triggered by:
•
Pictures
•
Items the person made (knitted slippers, Christmas ornaments, etc.)
•
Smells (wood, car oil, cinnamon, playdough, etc.)
•
Textures (fabrics, tree bark, etc.)
•
Cards made by their children, awards, medals
•
Pets, favorite books or songs
...the ideas are limitless.
These projects can be done with the whole family involved. They can then be used as a memory aid or conversation starter, and can be passed down from one generation to the next.
